Safety at Large/ <br>Complex Fire Investigations Course Overview

This four-day tested training course for experienced fire investigators provides detailed information on the safety issues and hazards associated with large or complex fires. It then offers specific information and methodologies to assess hazards and their risk, mitigate the hazards, and implement appropriate safety procedures for these and many other post-fire investigation scenes. There are prerequisites for this course.

Course Overview

The course, adapted from the ATF Incident Safety Officer course, focuses on post-fire investigation safety. While this is not a certification course nor the NFPA Incident Safety Officer course, it covers important safety aspects for fire investigators in the aftermath of fires. The course includes the latest safety guidelines and incorporates relevant FEMA ICS Safety Officer information.

Prerequisites for Enrollment

To enroll in this course, prospective students must meet the first two requirements and should have the others:

  • Minimum of 3 years fire scene exam experience
  • Completed a basic fire investigation course (at least 40 tested hours)
  • Completed the following CFITrainer.net courses:
  • Electrical Safety
  • Fundamentals of Residential Building Construction
  • Fire Investigator Scene Safety
  • Site Safety Assessment
  • Completed NIMS/ICS 100, 200, and one of the following:
  • 300, 400, 700, 800 (some can be taken online via FEMA Training)

This two-day tested training will prepare public and private fire investigators to understand and recognize safety issues and hazards at fire investigation scenes at a more detailed level than what is covered in the basic fire investigator training courses. The course material has been developed following applicable NFPA and OSHA standards and documents and includes the latest safety information from a wide variety of sources. This is a unique course that focuses exclusively on the post-fire scene and is for all fire investigators.

  • Duration: 1 day
  • This course focuses on the OSHA standards relevant to anyone working in the post-fire environment.

Fire Investigator Health and Safety

  • Duration: Half-day
  • This course covers essential health and safety guidelines for fire investigators and others working at post-fire scenes.

Post-fire Scene Decontamination

  • Duration: 2 hours (Practical Demonstration)
  • Learn the processes required for field decontamination at post-fire scenes.
